What is Rotary?

Founded in Chicago in 1905, Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service and help to build goodwill and peace in the world. Rotary’s global membership is approximately 1.2 million men and women who belong to more than 32,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.

President's Message

Welcome to the Rotary Club of Sudbury.

It’s amazing to think that we are now in our 86th year as a club. In that time, Rotarians have raised and distributed thousands of dollars in support of local charities and organizations such as the Sudbury Food Bank, Alzheimer Society, Pioneer Manor and endowment funds for Laurentian University, Collége Borèal and Cambrian College.

As Rotarians, our reach extends worldwide through Rotary International. Our 20 year legacy of eradicating polio, and providing clean drinking water, medical care and education to underdeveloped nations will continue until there is no more need.

Our mission for 2008/2009 is “Make Dreams Real” which has Rotarians around the globe focusing on the world’s children. It’s almost unbearable to consider that every day more than 30,000 children die needlessly from malnutrition, unsanitary living conditions and preventable disease. Here in Sudbury, we – along with the Sunriser’s – will be looking at less fortunate children in our own backyard and helping to ensure that they have a brighter future.

But Rotary is about more than raising money. It’s about volunteering – Easter Seals, Blues for Food, Rib Fest, Pioneer Manor and anywhere helping hands are needed. That being said, as Rotarian’s we know our reward is not only accomplishing extraordinary things, it’s fellowship, fun and networking with community leaders, business professionals, and some of the best people you’ll ever meet.

I am pleased to serve as President of the Rotary Club of Sudbury and am honoured to be in the company of the great people who have served before me. If you haven’t experienced Rotary before, I invite you to attend a meeting as my guest and find out for yourself how ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary things.

If you have any questions about Rotary, or are considering becoming a member, please don't hesitate to contact me via .

Yours in Rotary,

Steve Irwin,
President (2008/2009)
